If you observe closely, you’ll notice that the calories in white bread actually contains the same calories as bread with grains or wholemeal. Most bread calories come from carbohydrates sourced from refined flour, and the calories made from this are absorbed rapidly by our bodies compared to brown or wholemeal breads. This is because of the high fiber levels that are found in brown breads. Fiber fills up the stomach quicker, helps you to sense satiety easily, so we tend to eat less food. Less food means less calories, which means a healthier looking you in no time!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
But of course, don’t forget you still need to stay active and exercise.</div>

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arimo, sans-serif; font-size: 13.1198px; margin-bottom: 1.2em;">
MANILA, Philippines -  Gardenia Bakeries Philippines Inc. (GBPI), a manufacturer of breads known for their freshness, oven-baked aroma, softness, and nutritive value, through its Gardenia Nutrition and Wellness (Gardenia N&W) team, recently went to the IBM Philippines office in Quezon City.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arimo, sans-serif; font-size: 13.1198px; margin-bottom: 1.2em;">
Team Gardenia provided essential nutrition counseling and other helpful information, especially on meal preparation using Gardenia Health Breads and other concerns on health and nutrition.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arimo, sans-serif; font-size: 13.1198px; margin-bottom: 1.2em;">
The activity was part of Gardenia’s “Tagged Healthy” nutrition and diet needs campaign, the company’s continuous advocacy to promote wellness and healthy lifestyle among many Filipino consumers.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arimo, sans-serif; font-size: 13.1198px; margin-bottom: 1.2em;">
Aine de Guzman, Gardenia N&W’s resident nutritionist-dietitian, said many people often neglect the value of eating healthy food because of the varying kinds of work and lifestyle that they have.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arimo, sans-serif; font-size: 13.1198px; margin-bottom: 1.2em;">
“They even skip meals because of their different work schedules. They really don’t eat right that’s why we also want to inculcate in them that there is no reason why they should not eat nutritious food. Gardenia has a wide range of bread choices suited to their needs and lifestyle,” De Guzman said on the sidelights of the IBM Health Camp.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arimo, sans-serif; font-size: 13.1198px; margin-bottom: 1.2em;">
The Gardenia N&W team recently held a nutrition counseling and lecture activity at the IBM Philippines’ office located at UP-Ayala TechnoHub in Quezon City, one of the many places the team has visited throughout the country for the “Tagged Healthy” campaign.</div>
<div class="block block-philstar-ad" id="block-philstar-ad-template-article-bottom" style="background-color: white; float: left; font-family: Arimo, sans-serif; font-size: 13.1198px; margin-right: 10px; text-align: center; width: 336px;">
<div class="content" style="font-size: 1.071em; margin-top: 0px;">
<span class="element-invisible" style="clip: rect(1px 1px 1px 1px); height: 1px; overflow: hidden; position: absolute !important;">Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: <span style="font-size: 13.1198px;">Aside from being provided with beneficial health and nutrition tips, the employees and other consumers present were also taught how to come up with easy-to-prepare sandwiches even if they are in a hurry, using Gardenia’s popular breads like the Classic White Bread.</span></span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arimo, sans-serif; font-size: 13.1198px; margin-bottom: 1.2em;">
De Guzman, however, said that aside from the Gardenia Classic White, there are also a lot of Gardenia bread products that employees can use to prepare great-tasting and nutritious meals in a jiffy, in particular Gardenia’s range of “healthylicious” bread choices.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arimo, sans-serif; font-size: 13.1198px; margin-bottom: 1.2em;">
Some of them include the High Fiber Whole Wheat Bread, High Fiber Wheat Raisin Loaf, Honey Oat Loaf, Slim ‘n Fit, High Calcium Milk Bread and Sugar Free 12-Grain Loaf.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arimo, sans-serif; font-size: 13.1198px; margin-bottom: 1.2em;">
The High Fiber Whole Wheat Bread, according to De Guzman, is high in dietary fiber that may help cleanse the digestive system and promote good digestion. It can help achieve one’s ideal weight since it’s a high fiber food, which may satisfy hunger on fewer calories. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arimo, sans-serif; font-size: 13.1198px; margin-bottom: 1.2em;">
Meanwhile, the High Fiber Wheat Raisin Loaf may help cleanse the digestive system, and the raisins are good allies when it comes to fighting aging and diseases since they are rich in antioxidants.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arimo, sans-serif; font-size: 13.1198px; margin-bottom: 1.2em;">
On the other hand, Gardenia Honey Oat Loaf “that contains beta-glucan from oats” may help maintain a healthy heart while the Slim ‘n Fit variant helps health-conscious people and weight-watchers maintain their ideal weight because of the presence of L-Carnitine, a type of amino acid that helps turn fat into energy partnered with regular exercise, and is also a natural antioxidant.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arimo, sans-serif; font-size: 13.1198px; margin-bottom: 1.2em;">
Lastly, Gardenia’s High Calcium Milk Bread can also help build strong bones and teeth while the Gardenia Sugar Free 12-Grain Loaf may also help keep blood sugar level normal.</div>

Bread. Portable, compact, and sold everywhere, it’s arguably the world’s most popular food. Yet, in the Philippines where bakeries thrive—from the neighborhood <em>panaderi</em>a to the trendier bakery cafés or artisanal shops—the per capita consumption of wheat-based products, bread in particular, remains very low.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px !important; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding: 10px 0px 0px; width: 653px;">
Gardenia Philippines president Simplicio Umali attributes this to the fact that Filipinos find rice to be more filling than bread: “Filipinos like their rice so much because it fills them right away. When you eat rice, it expands in the stomach and fills it up instantly. Bread is not as filling as rice, however it is more nutritious. Right now, the bread industry in the Philippines is flat primarily because consumers are holding back on their expenditures, especially now that they are preparing for the Christmas season. It is really affecting the volume sale of the bread sale.”</div>

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px !important; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding: 10px 0px 0px; width: 653px;">
Umali spoke to InterAksyon during the Happy Bread Day event held recently at SM Mall of Asia in celebration of World Bread Day. The annual celebration aims to heighten awareness on the nutritional value of bread and draw attention to the efforts bakers carefully put in to make them.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px !important; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding: 10px 0px 0px; width: 653px;">
Umali added, “Before, the breakfast consumption ratio was 80 to 90 percent rice and only 10 percent bread. But now, it has gone down to 60, event reaching as low as 50. The consumption of bread is getting stronger, except on the lower sector which still consumes more rice. But the ABC income sectors, which is about 40 percent of the population, now prefer bread for breakfast, especially with their fast-paced lifestyle.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px !important; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding: 10px 0px 0px; width: 653px;">
<strong>Healthier breads</strong><br />As a bread company, Umali enthused, it is their responsibility to bring healthy eating habit to the consciousness of the consumers. “We have to make people think about their health. Instead of eating more rice, consume bread which has more vitamins and minerals, more nutritious than rice,” advised Umali.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px !important; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding: 10px 0px 0px; width: 653px;">
High-wheat breads can be a good source of fiber which is beneficial to the digestive system, as well as vitamins B-complex which is needed to produce energy. Breads with nuts and seeds are high in healthy fats which is good for the heart. “It has more nutrients inherent to its base ingredients such as calcium. It only ha iodine and vitamin A, which can be found in the flour as mandated by our government. We even put folate,” shared Umali.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px !important; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding: 10px 0px 0px; width: 653px;">
Although bread can be part of a healthy diet, choosing the right kind of bread and watching portion size are something one needs to take into consideration. Not all breads are healthy options, such as heavily-processed white bread with little nutritional value. When buying bread, check the nutritional chart, make sure it has lower glycemic index (which means the bread has a slower release rate of sugar into the blood stream), contains high fiber and is made from whole grain.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px !important; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding: 10px 0px 0px; width: 653px;">
It is easy to keep on munching bread, but watch the portions. A person with a 2,000-calorie plan only needs six servings of grains, which includes all its by-products such as bread, pasta and oatmeal, among others.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px !important; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding: 10px 0px 0px; width: 653px;">
<strong>Next Healthy Sandwich Hit</strong><br />Healthy bread should go with healthy toppings or fillings. Adding sugar-laced, high-calorie and fat-filled toppings can turn any healthy bread into junks.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px !important; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding: 10px 0px 0px; width: 653px;">
“That is why we launched The Next Big Sandwich Hit. While there are many varieties of bread, one must eat good food and it is not just having bread, but it’s also finding out what delicious spread and filing to use, while still making it a healthy snack,” said Umali.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px !important; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding: 10px 0px 0px; width: 653px;">
Ten teams from top HRM and culinary universities—Adamson University, Far Eastern University, La Consolacion College, National University, Philippine Women’s University, St. Paul Quezon City, St. Scholastica’s College Manila, University of the East, University of the Philippines, and University of Santo Tomas–competed in the tough and gruelling three-stage sandwich-making competition.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px !important; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding: 10px 0px 0px; width: 653px;">
During the finale, the teams went through Audience Votes and the Main Cooking Challenge components.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px !important; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; padding: 10px 0px 0px; width: 653px;">
For the Audience Votes, teams were given an hour to prepare and serve the audience 100 bite-sized sandwiches; while for the Main Cooking Challenge, they had 40 minutes to create and present two thematic full-sized sandwiches to the judges. The themes included the Sexy Sandwich, defined as healthy yet delicious sandwich, and the Philippines City Sandwich which would depict a certain Philippine city that was assigned to each team.</div>
