Gardenia’s share widening to 70% with P1-B expansion

Gardenia Bakeries Philippines, Inc., the country’s largest bread manufacturer, expects faster growth of 30 percent this year from P5 billion in 2015 and further widening of its market share to as much as 70 percent in three years following its plant capacity expansion.</div>

Company president and general manager Simplicio Umali Jr. said the P1-billion plant expansion, which it inaugurated Wednesday, will increase capacity by 50 percent to 150,000 loaves per day. The Singapore-owned bread maker has a total of six plants already in the country.</div>

With the new plant, Gardenia expects sales to grow 30 percent this year from P5 billion last year. This growth projection is more than double than the actual 11 percent growth posted in 2015 versus 2014. The new plant will produce 6,000 loaves per hour and special products (artisanal and community bread). At present, Gardenia accounts for 50 percent market share overall and 60-65 percent share in Metro Manila market.</div>

“With expansion nationwide our market share will rise 60 to 70 percent in three years,” Umali said. The company will intensify distribution thru continued efforts of countryside market development specifically in provincial Luzon and saturation of convenience stores and sari-sari stores in urban centers.</div>

The new plant will serve bread demand of consumers of the entire Luzon market from Cagayan Valley to Sorsogon Province. The new plant is equipped with additional robotics and the latest available technology in modern baking which came from the best baking suppliers from all over the world like in Germany, the Netherlands, United States, and Japan.</div>

The whole plant is computer-controlled starting from the use of an improved concept in the ingredient handling and makeup systems, use of robotics in handling baking pans and a unique technology in the depanning process which promises to be gentler to the bread, completely untouched by human hands.</div>

During the plant inauguration event held at Laguna International Industrial Park (LIIP) Biñan, Laguna, Umali said they applied the best technologies on the new production line.</div>

“There are improved systems and technologies in the makeup, proofing and automated handling process that will help produce high quality breads,” he said.</div>

“The slicers are more accurate. We also have a tumbler where all four sides of the loaf are checked. There is also a tornado cleaner that ensures all baking pans are very clean and free of crumbs,” Umali added.</div>

The new oven baking system will continue to use environment-friendly liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and is to take in compressed natural gas once it is made available in the industrial market.</div>

Umali also noted that consumers can now expect more “cottony” breads and finer grains. He ensures that with the new plant, Gardenia breads will have the same great delectable taste.</div>

According to Umali, despite the continuous growth of the country’s bread industry, the Philippines has still a much lower bread consumption compared to the ASEAN and neighboring countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.</div>

It is one brand that has clearly evolved with the local market.<br />
From innovating the way bread is baked in the country 18 years ago, 
Gardenia Bakeries Philippines Inc. has since offered Filipinos a wide 
range of bread products and flavors while raising the quality and 
standards in the packaged bread segment.<br />
As it has already captured a healthy share of the packaged bread 
segment, Gardenia is now venturing into the “unpackaged” market where it
 seeks to “introduce innovation and offer better alternatives to the 
traditional products available in the market.”<br />

The unpackaged bread segment refers to breads sold in specialty 
bakeries and products sold in community neighborhood bakeries, while the
 packaged category refers to the individually packed, branded breads 
sold at supermarkets, groceries, and convenience stores.<br />
In a recent briefing, Gardenia Bakeries president Simplicio P. Umali 
Jr. announced that the company’s new venture would see the rollout of 
some 1,500 Big Smile Bread Station bakeries across the country, and 
about 200 Bakers Maison branches over the next few years.<br />
The Big Smile Bread Station is Gardenia’s first version of a 
neighborhood bakery chain, which offers classic Filipino bread favorites
 like pandesal, ensaymada, pan de coco, kababayan and spanish bread.<br />
All products will be baked daily in a sanitized and pest-free central
 production facility using Gardenia’s advanced technology and baking 
expertise.<br />
With this, consumers will be assured of better and consistent quality breads at affordable prices.<br />
Gardenia has signed a franchise agreement with Bread Republic to open at least 14 Big Smile stores within the year.<br />
Since July, three bread stations in Pasig, Muntinlupa and Cabuyao have already opened.<br />
Through Bakers Maison, meanwhile, Gardenia expects to capture a share of the special breads segment.<br />
Bakers Maison is a specialist manufacturer of authentic French-style 
breads and pastries based in Australia operated under QAF Ltd., the same
 owner of Gardenia Philippines.<br />
“We are now bringing in Bakers Maison in the Philippines to give our 
target market a richer bread experience and more innovative selection of
 delectable breads and pastries, inspired by traditional and authentic 
French recipes. [It] will also showcase a fusion of flavors from all 
over the world,” Umali said.<br />
Bakers Maison will open its first store at SM City North in November 
this year and is set to open another in December via a franchising 
agreement with Bakery Boutique.<br />
According to Umali, all the Big Smile and Bakers Maison branches will be put up via franchising agreements.<br />
For Big Smile, a franchising package can be worth P1.2 million, while
 for Bakers Maison, the amount could vary from P7 million to P15 million
 depending on the size and the proposed location of the branch.<br />
To support the expansion of these bakeries, Gardenia will invest some
 P300 million in its commissary and other additional logistics 
requirements.<br />
“Gardenia’s delightful goodness is definitely reaching more markets 
now with Big Smile Bread Station and Bakers Maison stores. The bread 
giant holds true to its commitment of serving quality breads to valued 
Filipino consumers,” Umali concluded.<br />

 Ang Gardenia Plant ay isa sa mga malaking and most advanced fully 
automated large-scale bread manufacturing plant sa ating bansa ngaun na 
patatagpuan sa Laguna International Industrial Park o mas kilala nilang 
LIIP.<br />

2. Mayroon silang Giant Silo kung saan andun ang mga raw materials sa paggawa ng isang masarap at malinamnam na gardenia bread.<br />

 Twin Spiral Cooling Tower, isa yan sa mga main attraction sa loob ng 
Gardenia Bread Plant sapagkat dito mo makikita talaga kung gaano kadami 
ang nagagawa ng Gardenia Bread Plant sa loob lamang ng isang araw at 
nakakagawa sila ng 650,000 na tinapay sa isang araw lamang.<br />

6. Bago magsimula ang tour mayroon kayong papanoorin kung saan ipapakita
 kung paano nga ba nagsimula ang Gardenia Philippines at kung paano ito 
naging isang matagumpay na company sa Pilipinas.<br />
