<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Ever heard of a Calzone with champorado and tuyo as filling? How about a dumbbell-shaped sandwich? These and more creative, and innovative sandwich recipes were created by the students who took part in the elimination round of Gardenia’s Next Big Sandwich Hit 2015.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
A total of 20 teams from selected colleges and universities in Luzon emerged as finalists after a very challenging “School Hop” elimination round held at each of the schools.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
For the elimination round, the students were asked to create two sandwiches following a pre-selected theme based on 10 bread eating occasions. One sandwich was based on their interpretation of their school spirit, and the other is a price challenge recipe that is worth P35 or below per serving.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<img alt="NBSH SCHOOL HOP 2" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3460" height="525" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" src="http://cookmagazine.ph/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/NBSH-SCHOOL-HOP-2.jpg" srcset="http://cookmagazine.ph/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/NBSH-SCHOOL-HOP-2.jpg 700w, http://cookmagazine.ph/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/NBSH-SCHOOL-HOP-2-300x225.jpg 300w, http://cookmagazine.ph/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/NBSH-SCHOOL-HOP-2-600x450.jpg 600w" style="border-radius: 7px; border: 0px; clear: both; cursor: pointer; display: block; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; height: auto; line-height: inherit; margin: 18px auto; max-width: 100%; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" width="700" /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
While the competition was on-going, a bunch of students was also taking the opportunity to learn and equip themselves with sandwich making skills and techniques through Gardenia’s Sandwich Academy program. Chef Jeremy Favia, guest celebrity chef, did a lecture and demo back to back with Gardenia’s own resident chef, Benjo Fundales. Both showcased different recipes and hacks that can be done to level up Gardenia’s perfect bread canvas. Gardenia’s Sandwich Game Truck was also stationed in the campus where students were able to play a touchscreen game that offers a real sandwich surprise.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The winning teams from the elimination round were required to subject the winning economy sandwich to a business implementation program to test its marketability. The students were tasked to come up with strategies for selling and marketing their bread creations which is Gardenia’s way of giving the students an avenue to experience what it’s like to run a business of their own.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
For three consecutive years, Gardenia continues its thrust to discover and empower aspiring chefs and practitioners in the food industry with the NBSH Competition. And for this year, Gardenia took NBSH to another level as they increased the competition’s coverage from Metro Manila to the whole of Luzon. Gardenia has made it a commitment not only to promote the healthy goodness of eating sandwiches but also to teach culinary students the value of hard work and likewise develop programs that help inspire, ignite and expose their entrepreneurial skills in activities such as NBSH.</div>

The “Next Big Sandwich Hit” is a culinary competition started by Gardenia Bakeries Phils. Inc. (GBPI) two years ago because of their commitment to continuously inspire and ignite the passion of aspiring practitioners in the food industry. Gardenia did not only challenge the culinary students to become more creative and innovative in creating sandwiches but also let students understand the importance of the qualities of bread—from taste to aroma to texture to freshness and to all the nutritive goodness. Indeed, we can say that a good sandwich starts with a good bread.</div>

MANILA,
 Philippines - Gardenia Bakeries Philippines Inc. is expanding its local
 production capacity to cater to the continuous growth of the bread
industry with the inauguration of its P1-billion plant in Laguna.<br />
Gardenia on Wednesday night opened its sixth bread plant capable of
producing 150,000 loaves per day or a 50 percent increase from its
current production capacity.<br />
 “The opening of this plant will further enhance Gardenia’s
production capacity, and fast-track its growth momentum in the
Philippines. It puts Gardenia in the forefront of the bread and bakery
industry, and enables the company to pursue new heights of growth and
excellence,” QAF Ltd. group managing director Tan Kong King said.<br />
The QAF Group of Singapore is the parent company of Gardenia Philippines.<br />
The new plant is expected to serve bread demand of consumers of the
entire Luzon market from Cagayan Valley to Sorsogon province.<br />
With the additional capacity from the new plant, Gardenia Philippines
 president and general manager Simplicio Umali said the company is
expected to meet the bread market demand of Filipino consumers in the
Luzon area in the next few years.<br />
 “Gardenia’s newest plant combines the latest available technologies
and equipment in the field of bread baking from all over the world. This
 ensures consumers that they will only receive best quality Gardenia
products made from a state-of-the-art, sophisticated baking facility.
Sufficient bread supplies to our retail trade partners are now ensured,”
 Umali said.<br />
According to Umali, the total bread market in the Philippines has an
estimated value of P18 billion divided into two categories - the
packaged and unpackaged segments.<br />
The packaged, branded segment amounts to P9 billion, where Gardenia
holds about 50 percent; while the unpackaged bread segment also has an
estimated value of P9 billion.<br />
Umali said despite the continuous growth of the country’s bread
industry, the Philippines still has a much lower bread consumption
compared to neighboring countries Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.<br />
 “We will move fast forward in reaching a wider scope of our market
as we increase bread supplies. With more bread supply, we will need to
expand and intensify our bread distribution coverage, and make Gardenia
products more easily accessible and available to consumers in more
barangays that are currently not reached by our distribution network.
This will also support the expansion plans of supermarkets and
convenience store chains,” Umali said.

<b><b>Brand Y</b> (1st row): </b>Fungus developed immediately after the expire date. After 1 week, fungus were widespread.<br />

<b>Brand X(2nd row): </b>Small amount of fungus started to develop after 1 week it expired.<br />
<b>Gardenia (3rd row)</b><br />

This
 experiment is to test the amount of preservatives inserted in the
bread. The lesser it is, the faster fungus grow on the bread. From this
experiment, it clearly shows that Gardenia’s bread started to have
fungus way too late! Conclusion? Seems like Gardenia is no longer the
best choice here…

vision for the company.<br />

"And I work with people. And it's the people that would be able to bring us towards that objective," he said.<br />
